March 11 Update: UW Health Releases New Guidelines on Visitors, Volunteers and Events

Madison, Wisconsin - As part of its COVID-19 preparedness efforts UW Health announced new guidelines on visitors to its Madison-area hospitals. These changes, which will go into effect March 11, are designed to ensure both patient and visitor safety.

 

Visitor/Primary Support Guidelines

  • American Family Children's Hospital (including pediatrics specialty clinics, surgical and inpatient units)

    • Allowed: Two primary support persons per patient at one time (in room or in building)

    • Not allowed:
      • Patient siblings
      • Family members in operating room suites. American Family Children's Hospital care teams will work with families accordingly.

  • UW Health Madison-area locations including:
    • University Hospital
    • UW Carbone Cancer Center
    • UW Health at The American Center
    • UnityPoint Health-Meriter
    • Madison Surgery Center
    • Transformations Surgery Center

    • Allowed: One visitor/primary support per patient at one time (in room or in building)
      • Note: For inpatient areas, it is strongly encouraged that a designated visitor/primary support person stay the same within a 24-hour period. 

  • Exception: End-of-life situations
    • There will be no limit to the number of visitors at the end-of-life patient’s bedside only if those visitors are without symptoms
  • UW Health Clinics

    • Adult care areas: One support person allowed per patient

    • Pediatric care areas: Two support persons allowed per patient

Volunteer Services

  • Most volunteer services have been discontinued until further notice. Select volunteer services will continue and those assisting with these services will be contacted.

Visiting Groups

  • Allowed: Group meetings, gatherings or tours of 50 people or less

  • Suspended: Group meetings, gatherings or tours of more than 50 people

  • Exception: UW School of Medicine and Public Health sites (which will follow UW-Madison recommendations)

Patient Groups

  • Suspended: Scheduled patient groups (such as classes, therapies, wellness and support groups) for patients age 60 and over

Volunteer Services

  • Most volunteer services have been discontinued until further notice. Select volunteer services will continue and those assisting with these services will be contacted.
