UW Health Receives Two National Awards for Achievements in Sustainability

Madison, Wisconsin - In recognition for successful programs to reduce its environmental impact, UW Health received two significant awards from Practice Greenhealth, the nation's leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. UW Health received the Partner for Change Award, and the Circles of Excellence in Healthy Food Award.


The Partner for Change Award recognized UW Health for its overall sustainability program including the reduction and elimination of mercury, reducing and recycling waste, sourcing products sustainably, improving energy performance and more. The Healthy Food award recognized UW Health as a top ten leader in initiatives for meat and sugar-sweetened beverage reduction, healthier meat procurement, local sourcing, food waste prevention and management.


UW Health's accomplishments include:

  • Improving energy performance system wide by 18 percent since 2013 in addition to a 40 percent recycling rate at University Hospital and American Family Children's Hospital.
  • Efforts in the operating rooms saved more than 4,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent gas from reaching the earth's atmosphere while reducing costs by nearly $250,000 per year.
  • Clinical plastics are recycled and 2.4 tons of blue wrap per year is diverted from the landfill.
  • Culinary services: 28 percent of total spend was on local or sustainable foods and two-thirds of meat offerings in University Hospital are antibiotic free.
