University Hospital retained its position as best hospital in Wisconsin and ranked among the top 50 hospitals in nine medical and surgical specialties in the 2016-17 edition of the Best Hospitals guide published by U.S. News & World Report.
The hospital is nationally ranked in the following specialties:

- Gynecology (13)
- Nephrology (28)
- Neurology and Neurosurgery (40)
- Orthopedics (50)

"High-quality, patient-and-family-centered care is foundational to who we are as a health care organization," said UW Health CEO Dr. Alan Kaplan. "While the U.S. News rankings are one of many measurement tools, we're honored that our commitment to all patients and families is reflected in the rankings and our position as the best hospital in Wisconsin."
Approximately 5,000 hospitals around the country were evaluated and only 153 ranked in at least one of 16 specialties. Most of the data for the rankings comes from the American Hospital Association Annual Survey Database. U.S. News calls the database "the most comprehensive and dependable database of information on institutional health care."
Some of the factors considered were patient safety, presence of advanced technologies and a high-level trauma center, patient outcomes and nurse staffing.
While most of the specialties are ranked on data, rankings in ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology are rated solely on reputation as determined by a physician survey.
University Hospital was also rated high-performing, the highest rating possible, for:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
- Aortic valve surgery
- Heart bypass surgery
- Heart failure
- Colon cancer surgery
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Hip and knee replacements
- Lung cancer surgery
Ratings were compiled from data including Medicare administration claims, the federal government's Hospital Compare program, the American Hospital Association annual survey, clinical registry data, external certifications and post-discharge inpatient surveys. More than 4,000 hospitals were reviewed for the nine procedures and conditions.
University Hospital, with 505 beds, is part of the UW Health system which also includes American Family Children's Hospital, UW Health at The American Center, UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital, the UW Medical Foundation (physicians' group), SwedishAmerican in Rockford, and the UW Carbone Cancer Center.
