Patient and Visitor Screening Protects Patient and Staff Health at University Hospital and American Family Children's Hospital

Madison, Wisconsin – To ensure the health and safety of patients, staff and providers, all visitors entering University Hospital and American Family Children’s Hospital will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms, and we anticipate expanding that policy to other hospitals and clinics. Screenings will include a short series of questions and a temperature reading. This policy took effect Monday, March 23rd.

Depending on screening results, staff may consult with the patient or visitor’s clinic before the patient proceeds to their appointment. For example, visitors who have symptoms might be sent home or to the emergency department.

As a reminder, no inpatient visitors will be allowed at University Hospital except for healthcare decisionmakers and visitors for end-of-life patients. One support person will be allowed to accompany a cognitively disabled or physically impaired patient to a clinic visit. Two primary support people will be allowed at American Family Children’s Hospital.

The screenings will be at the main entrances of University Hospital and American Family Children’s Hospital.
