Raise awareness about the importance of organ, tissue and eye donation through OrangetoberMadison, Wisconsin - You can use your social media habit to help save lives.


Orangetober 2014 is spreading the word about organ, tissue and eye donation through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram-or your email!


UW Organ and Tissue Donation (UW OTD) is using the campaign to urge every person to take a picture of him - or herself with the sign, "I registered to be an organ, tissue and eye donor because …" and challenge friends to do the same. If people across Wisconsin post the "selfie" as their profile picture, the challenge could go viral and become the next social media sensation.


Last year, UW OTD created Orangetober as a mid-year campaign — in addition to National Donate Life Month in April — to increase donation awareness. It was very successful, producing 1,817 online registrations in October — 200 more than April and 300 more than October 2012. This year, UW OTD hopes to again see more new registrations in October than in April as Wisconsin residents convert their donor dots to legally authorized registrations.


For this year's push, the Orangetober team is sending e-mail messages to UW OTD and transplant staff and volunteers to encourage them to join the social media campaign. Team members have created an online tool kit that provides resources such as printable selfie signs, social media messages, images and an e-card. The team is also placing advertisements on Facebook.


Visit UW Health's Facebook page or Twitter feed for messages you can share or retweet, and ripple on. Remember, every post, share, tweet and e-mail helps us reach our goal! More than 2,200 Wisconsinites are waiting for life-saving organ donations; the more people who register to be organ donors, the more who can be saved.
