Connie Schulze joins UW Health as Director of Governmental Affairs
Madison, Wisconsin - Connie Schulze has been named director of governmental affairs for UW Health, effective November 7, 2016. Her responsibilities will also include representing, in coordination with UW-Madison, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.
Schulze comes to UW Health with nearly 20 years of experience working with public officials in state government. Most recently, she represented the government-relations interests of two large Milwaukee-based health systems, where she oversaw the development, messaging and execution of their state and federal legislative agendas.
Before that assignment, she served as a government relations and communications specialist at a Madison-based firm where she represented the interests of various health-care clients.
In addition to her experience as a professional advocate, Schulze served as the legislative liaison at the Department of Workforce Development and as a legislative assistant in both the Wisconsin State Assembly and Senate, including several years as a key aide in the office of the co-chair of the state’s budget-writing committee.
Schulze holds a bachelor of arts degree in public relations (1993) and a master of science degree in communication (2000) from UW-Whitewater.
"I am excited about the opportunity before me and I am eager to begin working for UW Health," Schulze said. "The budget is just a few months from introduction and we need to be ready to hit the ground running on behalf of the enterprise and the thousands of patients who seek treatment from this world-class academic medical center and health system."
In addition to the state budget, which will be introduced by Governor Walker in early 2017, it is anticipated a number of issues critical to both the health system and the school could come before the Wisconsin State Legislature.
"Connie is perfectly suited for the position of director of governmental affairs for UW Health. Her years of experience have made her an effective advocate who is respected and liked by lawmakers and staff from both sides of the aisle," said Dr. Alan S. Kaplan, CEO of UW Health.
UW School of Medicine and Public Health Dean Robert Golden added, "We are fortunate to have someone with Connie’s background with so many issues facing the clinical, academic and research missions of UW Health and UWSMPH."
