MADISON - An independent research organization has named American Family Children's Hospital among the top pediatric institutions in the U.S. for its efficient use of electronic health records.

American Family Children's Hospital ranked second in the survey conducted by KLAS, behind Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The rankings were based on the hospital's use of computer technology for patient billing, physician and nurse record-keeping and documentation, and barcodes to administer medications.

"American Family Children's Hospital may not be one of the biggest children's hospitals in the country, but we can be one of the best and safest," says American Family Children's Hospital Vice President Jeff Poltawsky. "Our electronic health record is helping us reach that goal, and this award confirms that we are in elite national company in our adoption of technologies that improve safety and quality of care."

American Family Children's Hospital, which first opened in 2007, is a 61-bed facility featuring pediatric operating rooms, a comprehensive cancer care unit, a globally recognized organ procurement organization and other programs that aim to promote a family-friendly atmosphere.
