Laparoscopic Repair of Parastomal Hernias
UW Health surgeons at UW Hospital and Clinics perform laparoscopic repair of a parastomal hernia. A parastomal hernia occurs when the abdominal contents bulge through the abdominal wall in the area where the stoma has been created.
Once in the operating room, patients are placed under general anesthesia. First, excess fat and scar tissue are removed from the site of the hernia laparoscopically. Then a synthetic mesh is placed on the areas of weakness in the abdominal muscles in order to reinforce them. Once the abdominal contents are placed back into the abdominal cavity, the swelling around the stoma should go down.
