In order for our sunscreen to be the most effective for our skin, we certainly want to make sure the one we choose to apply on a daily basis is going to give us the best protection possible.
Many studies have been done throughout the years to find what has provided the greatest range of protection, as well as what prevents wrinkles and cancer.
Broad Spectrum Protection: UVA and UVB
The most important thing about sunscreen in general is finding one that is considered broad spectrum. Broad spectrum protection means that it will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays. UVAs are usually implicated in aging and UVBs are the rays generally linked to skin cancer.
UVA penetrates deeper, causing tissue damage at a cellular level - even when the skin surface may feel cool. However, UVB remains primarily at the epidermis, causing your skin to burn and darken.
There are many ingredients in sunscreens that can be effective to a degree. Some sunscreen products will combine a variety of chemicals to give the best protection. There are, however, ingredients that are considered to be the most effective and stable, so it's very important to know which ones they are.
Mexoryl SX and UVA Blocking
Mexoryl SX seems to be the most effective UVA blocking ingredient currently available. It has been used in Canada and Europe since 1993, with FDA approval in the United States in 2006. La Roche Posay's Anthelios SX, available at Jeune Skin Care
, is the first moisturizing sunscreen with one of the most photo-stable ingredients to cover the widest range of the UVA and UVB spectrum.
Anthelios SX is a combination of three sun filters to fill in the gaps that other sunscreens can't when it comes to complete coverage. Anthelios SX is:
- UVA/UVB protective
- Non-acnegenic and non-comedogenic
- Fragrance and PABA-free
- Highest amount of Mexoryl available in the U.S.
Another popular ingredient that has been around for many years is zinc oxide. It has come a long way from the days of the white noses on lifeguards - now, zinc is available in a transparent cream to provide UVA/UVB protection.
Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense Cream, available at Jeune Skin Care, is a combination of highly concentrated ingredients that is cosmetically elegant and moisturizing. Ultimate UV Defense is:
- UVA/UVB protective
- Ideal for all skin types, including problematic skin
- Contains fewer chemicals
- Fragrance- and PABA-free
Transformations Jeune Skin Care offers a wide variety of physician-approved sunscreen containing both Mexoryl and Zinc Oxide ingredients.
