Are you overwhelmed by all of the products on the market today? Do you watch a commercial and rush to buy the product that claims it is going to make your skin look better and younger?

If you answered yes, you are not alone. Your skin care routine doesn't need to be complicated, but keep in mind our skin is our body's largest organ and we need to protect and take care of it.

Four simple steps would include a cleanser, corrective serum, moisturizer and sunscreen of at least 30 SPF (certain sunscreens are a combination of SPF and a moisturizer).

How do you know what type of cleanser to use? Your skin doesn't have to feel tight and dry after cleansing your face. Your cleanser should have active ingredients for your skin type allowing cleansing agents to lift impurities and oils, gently exfoliate dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling fresh and clean.

Serums are made of very small molecules; active ingredients in a serum penetrate your skin faster and more effectively. Serums are great for preventing photo-aging, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and promoting good skin health. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic Vitamin C is a great start (available at UW Health Transformations - August 2015 Discount: 15% Off SkinCeuticals); an antioxidant providing 8 times the skin's natural protection against photo-aging and defense from environmental aging.

Moisturizers are used to prevent dryness in our skin. They contain varying combinations of emollients and humectants to achieve their beneficial effects. Even if your skin is on the oily side, you still need to moisturize. We all need hydration. In this case, try SkinMedica's Ultra Sheer Moisturizer or SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel (both available at UW Health Transformations).

Sunscreens are important because they protect the skin from damaging rays. However, it is important to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen protecting against UVA (aging rays)/UVB (burning rays). Many sunscreens are dual action as they are a moisturizer, as well. SkinCeuticals Physical Defense SPF 30 and Revision Intellishade SPF 45 are great choices (both available at UW Health Transformations).
