Pucker Up: A Guide for First-Time Lip Color Users

Skin care advice from the medical aestheticians at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care:

Jeune Skin Care Aestheticians Danielle Kalscheur, Lisa Klein and Angie Byer

Lipstick, lip gloss, lip pencil, lip plumper, lip exfoliator…

The list can go on and on - so it's easy to get confused about what color and product to start with. Here is a quick guide for first-time lip color users:

Start with a Lip Gloss or Lip Stain

A lip stain adjusts to your own chemistry, whereas a lip gloss will provide a little extra color. A great one to try is Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain by Jane Iredale (available at UW Health Transformations).

Next Level: Lipstick

Select a shade a little darker than you would for the lip gloss. Hydrate and condition your lips with a lip exfoliator, which allows your lipstick to go on smoother and more evenly. A simple remedy: try brushing your lips with toothpaste and a tooth brush.

Ready to Go Bold?

Pick a vibrant color, like red, hot pink or dark brown! Fill in your lips with a shade lighter lip pencil or lipstick. Apply your chosen lipstick shade, followed by lip gloss over the top to soften. Too bold, you say? Use concealer to tone down the color and then apply clear lip gloss. Yes, you can pull off a bold color! A rule of thumb is to use neutral colors for the rest of your makeup.

Consider trying a lip treatment product (all available at UW Health Transformations):

Jane Iredale Lip Drink with SPF 15

$15.00*

Lip Drink is a colorless lip balm with broad spectrum SPF 15 and UVA P++ protection. Contains no petroleum-derived products that dry out the lips. People who are regular users of petroleum-based lip balms are on a continual drying cycle - the more they use, the drier their lips become.

This potent treatment helps prevent environmental damage, while smoothing and rehydrating the lip surface.

  • Helps prevent environmental damage, while smoothing and rehydrating the lip surface
