Chemical peels

Typically performed as a facial peel, a chemical peel enhances and improves the texture of the skin. It is an effective treatment for facial blemishes; helps prevent future breakouts and can revitalize the skin while unclogging pores. A chemical peel helps with fine lines, wrinkles and can help lighten uneven skin tone, all while leaving your skin with that healthy glow.

Superficial peels are the mildest type of chemical peel and can be used on all skin types. Superficial peels usually use liquid containing a mild acid, most often glycolic or lactic acid. These peels can be performed every 4-6 weeks.

A great start would be to try our Skinceuticals Micropeel “Lunch Hour Peel” or Skinmedica Illuminize Peel.

Retin A, retinols and any face waxing need to be stopped one week prior to chemical peels. Chemical peels are not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, or anyone who has taken Accutane in the last year.

Frequently asked questions about microneedling

Multiple skin conditions can be treated with the SkinPen Precision. In fact, collagen induction therapy is a great alternative to laser skin treatments. Fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity, skin texture and pigmentation, as well as acne scarring and stretch marks can be improved with this treatment. Most popular areas are the face and neck.

Although the downtime depends on the depth of penetration of the SkinPen Precision, it is usually very limited. The skin may be slightly pink or red for a few hours up to a few days after treatment. The skin may begin to feel a little tight a day or two after treatment.

Some dryness and tightness will be noticed within the first week after treatment, but the full effect is noticed six to eight weeks after treatment. Ideally, a series of four treatments is recommended and should be spaced three to five weeks apart.

This treatment is not suitable for any patient that has skin infections, is pregnant, lactating, has open wounds in the area being treated, history of keloids, poor wound healing or recent radiation treatments. Please note that if you have a history of herpes simplex outbreaks, you may require pretreatment with viral suppressive medications.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a process that gets rid of fat without surgery. It does not require any incisions or injections and works for both men and women. Because CoolSculpting is non-invasive, most people do not need any recovery time.

CoolSculpting works well for people wanting a thinner body part because the procedure freezes fat cells from specific parts of the body that are found troublesome in appearance.

CoolSculpting gives excellent results for a wide range of body types and ages, for both men and women. The procedure is designed for fat that is difficult to remove with diet and exercise. CoolSculpting is not recommended as a treatment for obesity. Learn more

Frequently asked questions about CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting can be effective for the following areas:

  • Abdomen

  • Flanks (Muffin top or love handles)

  • Outer thighs

  • Inner thighs

  • Chin

  • Bra fat

  • Back fat

  • Knees

  • Arms

  • Lower buttocks/thighs (Banana roll)

CoolSculpting does not require any incisions or injections. The applicator delivers focused cooling on the outside of the body to the targeted area and destroys the fatty cells. Once the fat cells have been destroyed, they gradually breakdown and are naturally removed from the body. Once they are removed from the body, those same fat cells cannot return or enlarge with weight gain.

Most people notice results a few days after the procedure, but it often takes 8 to 12 weeks for the full results to show. For many people, the results are better and last longer than other non-surgical fat removal methods.

Because CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure, most people do not need any recovery time and can immediately resume normal activities. Common side effects include brief redness, bruising and numbness to the skin of the treated area and normally go away within a few days to weeks after the procedure.

Permanent tattooing

Permanent tattooing involves implanting custom color pigment into the dermal layer of the skin. It is known as microdermal pigmentation or cosmetic tattooing. Permanent tattooing is a simple, non-surgical procedure that when performed properly, is safe and effective.

At UW Health Aesthetics, permanent tattooing services include breast areola repigmentation, for those who want to create the illusion of a nipple and areola after breast cancer and reconstructive surgery. Insurance might cover costs post-mastectomy.

Aesthetics medical aestheticians have received training and certification in the process.

Product highlight: Latisse

The desire to draw attention to our eyes and create beautiful lashes has existed since ancient times. But it wasn't until the early 20th century that mascara-type products similar to what we know today became commercially available.

Latisse is a medication for increasing length, thickness and darkness of eye lashes and is the only FDA-approved lash treatment.

Common questions about Latisse

With the use of Latisse, longer fuller lashes can be seen in as little as eight weeks, with full results in 16 weeks. The active ingredient Bimatoprost, a lipid coupound, is believed to extend the period by which the hair grows, increasing the amount of hair and the length of hair on the lash line.

Latisse was initially used in prescription eye drops to treat glaucoma under the name Lumigan. Patients using these eye drops noticed that thicker and longer lashes came as an unexpected side effect.

To use Latisse, cleanse the eye area and remove all traces of eye make- up. Apply one drop to the sterile applicator draw across the base of your upper lash line starting at the inner part of your eye and continuing to the outer part. Repeat on the other eye. Blot off any excess solution.

If Latisse is stopped, eyelashes will gradually return to their previous appearance as lashes are naturally shed and the new eyelashes grow in.

Latisse is a prescription medication, meaning you’ll need to talk to a healthcare provider about whether it’s a suitable treatment for you before purchasing it.

The most common side effects of Latisse include itching, redness of the eyes, skin darkening and dry eye symptoms. These side effects were reported in less than 4% of people who use Latisse. If you have any existing eye conditions, please consult your physician. You should not use Latisse while you’re pregnant or nursing.

Anti-aging ingredients

Do you ever wonder what the best products are for aging skin? Check out the list of our Aesthetician’s top favorite skin care ingredients to get healthy, vibrant looking skin at any age!

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that works to correct and protect the skin. It protects the skin from free-radical damage that we’re exposed daily to sun, smoke and pollution. It also is a required cofactor in collagen synthesis, so it helps to build collagen (the fibers in our skin that give it firmness). Oral doses of Vitamin C are not enough to give this type of protection and anti-aging benefits so a topical serum or cream is needed. SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic is a serum that provides a triple antioxidant treatment utilizing 15 percent pure L-ascorbic Vitamin C, 1 percent Vitamin E and 0.5 percent Ferulic acid.

  • SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic: $166

Fruit acids like glycolic, lactic and malic acids work to exfoliate the epidermis, smoothing the texture, softening fine lines and improving penetration of your other skin care ingredients like the Vitamin C and growth factors. Alpha hydroxy acids can be found in cleansers, toners and creams.

  • SkinCeuticals Purifying Cleanser: $35

  • SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 renew overnight: $80

Young, healthy skin has naturally occurring elements that provide great regenerative benefits, including growth factors. SkinMedica’s TNS Recovery Complex has been the most effective and stable growth factor product available. Growth factors work to stimulate collagen production and tissue repair. Is your skin sensitive to alpha hydroxy acids or retinols? TNS Recovery Complex is excellent for sensitive skin. It does not exfoliate and helps to heal the skin. Benefits include reduction of the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smoother skin texture and tone and added elasticity.

  • SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex: $179

A newer antioxidant that is derived from knotweed plant is available to help increase radiance, elasticity and density of the skin. Resveratrol helps sustain healthy longevity by neutralizing intracellular free radical damage and repairing the visible effects of age-accelerated skin. This nighttime anti-aging product boosts skin’s own antioxidant defense system to help repair and prevent accumulated damage. It can be used in combination with a retinol or retinoid (layer over your retinoid).

  • SkinCeuticals offers an exceptional 1 percent Pure Resveratrol: $153

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that naturally occurs in the dermis. When hyaluronic acid is applied topically, it can attract and retain 1,000 times its own weight in water. It draws moisture in and prevents it from leaving, enhancing the benefits of your moisturizer. The skin will immediately feel smoother and have a greater suppleness.

  • SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel: $82

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that works to rapidly exfoliate skin cells and promote collagen within the skin. Retinol is considered more “skin friendly” than the prescription Retin A, meaning results can be just as good as Retin A but with less dryness and irritation. Retinols should be used in the evening. Also, because of their exfoliating properties, make sure to use a good broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Use a medical-grade retinol like SkinMedica Retinols; available in three strengths at UW Health Skin Care.

  • SkinMedica Retinols: $60-90

One of the most important anti-aging products is sunscreen. One of the top causes of premature aging is sun exposure. Get into the habit of applying sunscreen every day (even if it's not sunny). Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen (both UVA/UVB block) that is SPF 15 or greater — unfortunately, makeup doesn’t count. Apply a specific sunscreen for the best protection and remember to reapply every 2 hours when you are outdoors. UW Health Aesthetics has a variety of sunscreens for every skin type.

  • Sunscreen (various brands): $35-56

Eye products

The skin under our eyes is thin and does not produce oil. As a result, this area is more fragile and prone to dryness. It is also quicker to show our age and can show signs of fatigue and inflammation including dark circles and puffiness. Squinting and facial expressions of the eyes create wrinkles, which is also a natural aging process. Eye creams can address and approve the appearance of these skin care concerns.

What our experts use

Trying to decide what products to use? Our staff shares a few of their favorites:

  • "CE ferulic, good antiaging and SPF protection that you can’t wash off." Alicia

  • "I love CE Ferulic. I use it almost daily on my face and hands. I believe it helps for sun protection; I notice fewer brown spots when I use it," Kari

  • "My favorite product is the Skin Medica HA5. I use it every morning after applying my Vitamin C. The HA5 has 5 types of hyaluronic acid and keeps my skin hydrated all day." Tammy

  • "Jane Iredale pressed base. I've been using this product for years. It’s an easily applied powder foundation with the added benefit of sunscreen. With this foundation you can control how much coverage you have, which I love. If there is one other product I would recommend it would be the pressed base with the pommist spritz. You 100 percent avoid the 'cakey' look with the pommist and stays looking fresh all day." Chantel

  • "I usually pick the CE Ferulic as my favorite product, but there’s another one that is running neck-and-neck with it. So, this time I’m going to choose the SC Glycolic 10 Overnight. It is a product that literally made an 'overnight' difference in my skin. I’ve noticed more clarity and smoothness to my skin. Love it." Sue

  • "Glycolic 10 Overnight treatment. Simple. My skin looks and feels amazing the next morning." Tammie

  • "I love the Forever Pink Lip Stain by Jane Iredale. It stays on all day and enhances your natural coloring. It is non-drying, long-lasting stain that looks a bit different on everyone because it adjusts to your own chemistry. I can’t go without my SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic either, it brightens my skin and helps even out my skin tone whiling fighting off free radicals." Danielle

  • "Jane Iredale Pressed Powder with Avene Spring Water. These two products together help me cover up my blemishes without giving me a caked-on makeup look. I like how it looks natural when I wear it. The spring water helps set my powder and gives me a little extra hydration for the day. SkinMedica Ultra Sheer Moisturizer is my favorite moisturizer because it is lightweight with no fragrance." Taryn

  • "I love the A.G.E. Eye complex. It has the benefits of instant and long-lasting results. It helps to minimize my fine lines, brightens my eye area and is full of antioxidants." Tamra
