Q. With the cold, dry winter weather approaching, can you suggest a good moisturizer?
A. The moisturizer that is best for you depends on many factors, including your skin type, your age and whether you have specific conditions, such as acne.
For general guidelines, consider the following:
Normal Skin
Normal skin is neither too dry or too oily. To maintain this natural moisture balance, use a water-based moisturizer that contains a lightweight oil. La Roche Posay's Hydraphase Moisturizer contains glycerin. Glycerin is a hydrating agent with a light, non-greasy feel that provides 12-hour hydration.
Dry/Mature Skin
To restore moisture to dry skin, choose a heavier, oil-based moisturizer containing antioxidants and humectants. These ingredients capture water on the skin's surface to provide excellent hydration. The SkinCeuticals B5 gel contains hyaluronic acid, a natural humectant that attracts and retains 1,000 times its weight in water. La Roche Posay's Substiane is a rich cream that contains the moisture binding emollients arginine and serine.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is susceptible to skin irritations, redness, itching or rashes. Look for a moisturizer that contains soothing ingredients and does not contain potential allergens, such as fragrance and dyes. La Roche Posay's Toleriane Moisturizer is fragrance-free and preservative-free. It is safe for intolerant skin and conditions such as rosacea and eczema. Soothing thermal spring water is an added antioxidant ingredient.
Oily Skin
Oily skin is prone to acne and breakouts. Though oily, such skin still needs moisture, especially after using products that remove oils and can dry out the skin. Choose a water-based product that is labeled "noncomedogenic," which means it won't clog pores. SkinMedica Ultra Sheer Moisturizer is oil-free and lightweight in feel. It contains panthenol to hydrate even the most oil-prone and sensitive skin.
