Q. Is it really necessary to use a toner as part of my skin care routine?
woman's face; UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care, Madison, WisconsinA. Although many women know the importance of cleansing and moisturizing their skin, it always seems to be a bit of a mystery when it comes to using a toner. Is it really that important?
Toners offer numerous benefits to many skin types. Also known as astringents and facial refreshers, the main purpose of a toner is to remove excess debris from the skin, as well as bring skin back to a normal balance after cleansing.
Naturally, our skin is somewhat acidic, with a PH balance between 5 and 6. After cleansing, due to the alkaline nature of some cleansers, the PH balance of skin gets disturbed, causing the skin to work overtime to restore moisture.
When the appropriate toner is used on the skin, it can actually increase the efficacy of other products applied afterward.
The most important thing to remember about toners is to choose the one best suited for your skin type.
Toners for Oily/Acne-Prone Skin
If you are oily or tend to have breakouts, toners can be especially helpful to you. Toners containing ingredients such as salicylic or glycolic acid leave behind a thin layer of medicated ingredients on the surface of the skin as well as within the pores to prevent future breakouts. An excellent toner to try is Biomedic's Effaclar Toner, available at Jeune Skin Care. It contains both salicylic and lipo-hydroxy acid to unclog and tighten pores without overdrying. Just think, if the pores are constricted, toning will assist in prevention of makeup and oils clogging pores.
Toners for Dry Skin
If your skin tends to be a bit drier, you may need a toner that will add a few hydrating ingredients or calm your skin. Some toners will even prepare skin for a moisturizer, allowing skin to absorb lotion better. An excellent toner to try is Biomedic's Hydraphase Toner, containing glycerin to hydrate the skin, which is available at Jeune Skin Care.
Toners and Shaving
Don't forget that many aftershave preparations are made of the same ingredients as toners. In this case, the ingredients provide some degree of antiseptic effects for tiny cuts or abrasions resulting from shaving. As a benefit… less ingrown hairs!
Summer Trick: Apply your facial toner to the bikini area prior to shaving. It will dissolve surface skin cells that could cause those painful ingrown hairs or even soothe razor burn.
