What are retinols?

Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative that helps to rapidly exfoliate skin cells. SkinMedica offers medical-grade retinols to help improve the appearance of aging and acne-prone skin.

Available only through a doctor's office, this product can help to:

  • Diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Promote skin exfoliation to enhance skin tone and texture and reduce the appearance of age spots
  • Encourage skin firmness
  • Improve skin tone/brightness

SkinMedica Retinols' unique patented MICROSPONGE delivery system provides gradual release over time to reduce irritation typically associated with retinoids.

Depending on skin type, there are two available strengths:

Tri-Retinol Complex 0.65% - Three forms of vitamin A delivered through a microparticle delivery system enhances skin texture through mild exfoliation without peeling. This strength is ideal for someone who has never used a retinol before or has dry, sensitive skin. ($55.00; prices subject to change)

Tri-Retinol Complex ES 1.10% - This extra-strength anti-aging treatment delivers three forms of vitamin A to improve skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles. Recommended for skin that has been pre-conditioned by the Tri-Retinol Complex 0.65% or another retinoid product. ($75.00; prices subject to change)

How do I use retinol?

Apply a pea size amount in the evening after cleansing. If a retinol product has never been used before, begin by limiting use to twice a week, gradually increasing frequency to every other night, and then advancing to each evening or as tolerated. For best results, do not apply moisturizer over the top. If skin is very dry, you may apply a gentle moisturizer as the final step. Mild redness, peeling and slight irritation could be possible when using the extra-strength 1.10%.

*Not to be used if pregnant, lactating or planning on becoming pregnant.

**Must stop retinol one week prior to any chemical peel, microdermabrasion or face waxing.
