Easy Skin Care Tips for Men

man washing his face; UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care

Guys: Do you wash your face in the shower with your bar of soap and call it a day? Please don't!

Try these men's skin care tips from the aesthetician experts at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care:

Soap vs. Cleanser

Soap is alkaline-based and can strip your natural barrier, cause your skin to be drier, and create more acne and blemishes. Invest in a cleanser. Your cleanser should have active ingredients for your skin type, allowing cleansing agents to lift and remove impurities and oils. A cleanser also gently exfoliates dead skin cells and leaves your skin feeling fresh and clean.

You can place your cleanser in your shower for morning, but make sure you also cleanse at night. Nighttime cleansing helps prevent skin dehydration, removes excess dirt, oils and pollution that is sitting on your face from the day.

Use Moisturizer

Moisturizers are used to prevent dryness in our skin. They contain varying combinations of emollients and humectants to achieve their beneficial effects. A moisturizer balances the skin's natural levels and reduces your sebum production (e.g., oil). Even if your skin is on the oily side, you still want to use a moisturizer. Oily complexions still need moisture and hydration, as any skin type can become dehydrated. Using a moisturizer will give your skin a better texture overall.

Don't Forget Sunscreen

If you are not using a moisturizer with SPF, then you still want to wear sunscreenPick a sunscreen with a broad spectrum and at least 30 SPF. Make sure you cover your ears (front and back), as these areas tend to get missed.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation involves the removal of dead skin cells on the skin's outer surface. A topical Retin-A/Retinol can help the skin feel smooth and refined. It minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and can help enhance skin texture. Use at night after washing your face, beginning 2-3 times a week to allow your skin to adjust.

Step up your exfoliation with a professional chemical acid peel (available at UW Health Transformations Jeune Skin Care). Superficial chemical peels can help with:

  • Mild acne scars
  • Aging skin
  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles
  • Pore size
  • And overall tone and texture of the skin
