A gastrectomy is the removal of part or all of the stomach.
This procedure is usually done for tumors of the stomach and can require removal of the entire stomach depending on the size and location of the tumor itself.
If all of the stomach is removed, a new connection needs to be made between the esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) and the intestine (called an esophagojejunostomy).
If only part of the stomach is removed, the remaining stomach also needs to be connected part to the rest of the intestine. This operation can also involve removing the lymph nodes surrounding the stomach and any additional organs involved by the tumor.
