Treatment of Liver Cysts

Liver cysts are common and usually require no treatment. However, some liver cysts can require treatment usually because they cause symptoms for the patient.

Cyst Fenestration

In most cases the cyst is opened, the fluid is removed, and then part of the wall of the cyst is removed. The cyst cavity is then treated and often a piece of omentum (a normal fatty cushion within the abdomen) can be attached to the liver surface to help prevent the cyst from coming back.

Cyst fenestration is usually done in patients with simple liver cysts but can be needed in patients with polycystic liver disease.
