What is Level I Trauma Care and why does it matter?
UW Health's Trauma Center, located at University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, is verified as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Level I is the highest, most distinctive category, recognizing a trauma center's dedication to providing the very best care for injured patients. Verification by ACS as a Level I Trauma Center is a requirement for designation by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
"Our specialized hospital is distinguished by the immediate availability of specialists, equipment and services," said Dr. Ann O'Rourke, director of the trauma division. "The risk of death is 25 percent lower at a Level I trauma center as compared to Level II trauma centers, which have a death risk of 15 percent lower compared to non-trauma centers."
