2013 marks the 12th year that UW Health has been a sponsor of this great event. Over the years UW Health walkers have raised more than $480,000 dollars in donations to support life-saving research.
The American Heart Association was founded by six cardiologists in 1924. Before AHA existed, people with heart disease were considered to be doomed to complete bed rest – or worse.
“We were living in a time of almost unbelievable ignorance about heart disease,” said Paul Dudley White, one of six cardiologists who founded the organization.
AHA has funded more than $3.5 billion in research since 1949, more than any organization outside the federal government. They have supported 13 Nobel Prize winners and lifesaving advancements such as the first artificial heart valve, cholesterol-inhibiting drugs, heart transplant capabilities, and CPR techniques and guidelines.
Last year UW-Madison had 33 active grants from AHA totaling over 4 million dollars. To learn more about the American Heart Association, visit www.heart.org.
