Based on their individual needs, our transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming (TNG) patients may work with one or several of our gender services team members, and/or experts from a variety of clinical programs.
Gender Services Navigator
Our gender services navigator can assist patients who are seeking gender-affirming/transition-related services. The navigator helps patients obtain letters of readiness for surgery and coordinates care among primary care physicians, mental health providers and specialists.
Behavioral Health Experts
UW Health offers services to support patients at any point during their gender affirmation process. Our behavioral health team is here to provide psychological services with the goal of allowing all people to explore their gender identity in a safe and non-judgmental environment. We help our patients find providers who can supply them with letters of readiness, which are required for some gender-affirming surgeries.
The UW-Madison Counseling Psychology Training Clinic provides high quality, cost efficient and multiculturally competent psychological and mental health services. Appointments: (608) 265-8779
Generations Fertility Care, a joint venture between UW Health and UnityPoint Health-Meriter, has helped many LGBTQ patients achieve their dreams of building their family. We’ll discuss your options, and our team of fertility specialists will guide you through the process, answer your questions and support your goals along the way. Our clinicians work with each patient to develop goals prior to treatment. We help patients start and manage gender-affirming hormones. Because hormone treatment is an ongoing process, patients who pursue gender-affirming surgery will receive care from our clinicians so appropriate hormone levels are maintained. Proper hormone management will reduce medical conditions such as osteoporosis or heart disease. We have highly skilled Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatric and Endocrinology physicians who are ready to help you achieve your goals. See the Gender Services Providers page to find a physician.
HIV Care and Prevention
Patients receive the most comprehensive care possible from a team of providers that includes their primary HIV clinician, as well as a specialty-trained nurse, pharmacist and medical case manager. Our goal is to provide expert, compassionate care in a confidential and welcoming environment. See the HIV/AIDS Comprehensive Care Program for more information.
Laser Hair Removal Services
In preparation for some surgeries, patients must arrange for permanent hair removal on certain areas of their body. Hair removal should be started as soon as possible because it can take 4–6 sessions to fully remove the hair. Learn more and schedule an appointment.
Pediatric and Adolescent Transgender Health
The UW Health Pediatric and Adolescent Transgender Health (PATH) Clinic works with patients and families to identify goals and create a specific plan of care. Services range from simple observation and guidance to puberty suppression and therapy for children of all ages. We educate children and their families about the options available to them, and to make them aware of resources and support networks so they understand they are part of a community.
