About

Michael Garren, MD, FACS, is a UW Health minimally invasive bariatric surgeon and a professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Garren specializes in bariatric (weight loss) surgery for people with obesity. He also performs advanced laparoscopic procedures such as colon, anti-reflux and hernia surgery.

Dr. Garren is passionate about providing people with access to high-quality health care. He takes time to educate patients about each procedure in order to make shared decisions about treatment.

As the medical director of the UW Health Surgical Weight Management Program, he understands that patients with obesity commonly have other health conditions, like diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease, that need to be addressed. Undergoing bariatric surgery not only produces weight loss, but also improves overall health and quality of life. The transition often brings a positive shift in the patient’s outlook on life — something Dr. Garren is thankful to be a part of.

When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Garren is instructing medical students and training residents and fellows. In his free time, Dr. Garren enjoys playing golf and spending time with his family.

Bariatric surgery not only changes the number on the scale, but it changes the patient’s outlook on life. They are healthier and really enjoy life again. That’s rewarding to see.
