Dr. Hermsen is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in Adult Cardiothoracic and Congenital (Pediatric) Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Hermsen earned his degree from The Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC, and, after finishing surgery residency at University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics, he completed two fellowships at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle, WA, in adult and pediatric cardiac surgery. After three years on the University of Washington faculty, he returned to Madison to join the UW Health Adult Cardiothoracic and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery teams. His clinical interests include surgery for pediatric and adult congenital heart defects, heart transplantation, circulatory support, and surgery for patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Dr. Hermsen's research interests include application of 3D printing in surgery for HCM and using simulation to improve training of new cardiothoracic surgeons.
