As a physician specially trained in emergency medicine, Joshua Gauger, MD leads a team of expert health care clinicians who treat people with illnesses or injuries that could be life-threatening or pose an immediate risk to their health and well-being. Injury or illness can be caused by disease, infection, stroke, heart attack, or bodily trauma, and may include symptoms such as fevers, vomiting, bleeding, shortness of breath, dizziness, weakness and pain. He speaks with patients, obtains lab tests and imaging, such as X-rays to diagnose the injury or illness and provides necessary treatment.
Whether it is a life-threatening event, such as a heart attack, or a condition needing rapid treatment, such as pneumonia, Dr. Gauger attentively and compassionately listens to all patients to understand their health care needs and provide the most advanced medical care available.
Dr. Gauger serves as medical director for the UW Health Emergency Department at University Hospital. In this role, Dr. Gauger focuses on maintaining an efficient and productive care team to provide outstanding emergency care to every patient. He also finds enjoyment in his non-clinical work, which includes quality improvement, patient safety, and operations. His current projects include work on sepsis, stroke, and trauma.
