Daniel K. Shirley, MD

About

Daniel Shirley, MD, is an infectious disease doctor at UW Health. Dr. Shirley cares for people with general infections and complex infectious diseases.

Dr. Shirley’s work ranges from diagnosing illnesses to prescribing medication and creating treatment plans. He also consults with other physicians as needed and offers recommendations to manage and prevent complex infectious diseases.

Working as a medical detective of sorts, Dr. Shirley often partners with colleagues to identify infections with unknown origins. Using patient history and open dialogue, Dr. Shirley is able to track down the source of the infection, devise treatment plans and stop the spread of the disease.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Shirley is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also participates in global health initiatives and researches ways to prepare for emerging infections and leads infection control efforts at UW Health, creating plans to protect patients and health care workers from acquiring new infections while in hospitals and clinics.

During his free time, Dr. Shirley and his wife enjoy life on their farm, raising cattle and sheep.

It’s rewarding to care for patients with unknown infections, make a correct diagnosis and find the right treatment to cure them.
