Awni Al-Subu, MD

Awni Al-Subu, MD, is a UW Health Kids pediatric critical care medicine doctor and an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Critical Care at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He cares for critically ill children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where he serves as medical director.

Dr. Al-Subu treats pediatric patients in the intensive care unit who have a wide range of critical illnesses such as acute respiratory failure, congenital heart disease and organ failure. He also provides care for patients waiting for organ transplants and those who need care following organ transplantation.

Dr. Al-Subu’s care philosophy is patient-focused. He considers each patient’s age when discussing treatment options and partners with families and the patient’s entire care team to provide the best care possible. He believes listening to his patients and their families is critical for the best outcomes.

In addition to his clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Al-Subu researches the use of noninvasive monitoring during cardiac arrest (heart stops beating) to ensure effective resuscitation.

In his free time, Dr. Al-Subu enjoys swimming and traveling.
