About

Neil Salyapongse, MD, is a UW Health hand and upper extremity surgeon and a professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Salyapongse treats patients with injuries to the elbow, forearm, wrist or hand. These injuries can be caused by arthritis, soft tissue conditions, nerve conditions or trauma. He specializes in hand surgery, microsurgery and plastic surgery.

He finds it especially rewarding to treat patients who are unable to do their favorite activities due to a hand condition. Dr. Salyapongse carefully listens to each patient to understand their background. This helps him determine a diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. He tries to make his patients comfortable during each visit and reduce their anxiety about surgery or their injury.

As a surgeon, Dr. Salyapongse has a special interest in improving health care worldwide. He advocates for simulated clinical and surgical training. This environment allows providers to practice complicated surgical procedures in a virtual setting. Simulated training supports his interest in global surgery and training surgeons in countries that may not have the same available resources.

In his free time, Dr. Salyapongse is an avid musician and enjoys outdoor activities.

I love being able to improve my patients’ quality of life. Helping people restore function in their hand or improve their ability to do things after injury really makes me happy.
