Staff Spotlight: Dianne Lahey

Dianne Lahey, Fitness Supervisor and Director of Swim ProgrammingOur Aquatics Center is a busy and vital component of the UW Health Sports Medicine Center. Each week, dozens of classes and hundreds of participants exercise in our pools.

Overseeing this abundance of aquatic activity are our long-time fitness supervisor, Jodi Oster and recent addition to our staff, Dianne Lahey.

Though Dianne is new to UW Health, she is far from a novice in her role as a Fitness Supervisor and director of swim programming. This month's Staff Spotlight proudly introduces you to Dianne and the many roles she plays here.

Dianne's position is multi-faceted and diverse. She supervises all of our swimming programs ranging from Masters Swim classes to beginners' swim classes and lessons. On top of that she hires, supervises and trains the lifeguarding staff here.

Not only is Dianne a lifeguard herself (and selflessly covers many of the aquatic center's guarding shifts), she is a Certified Lifeguarding Instructor. In addition, she is a WSI certified swim instructor and a Level 2 Certified Masters Swim coach.

Dianne especially enjoys helping adults learn how to incorporate swimming into their fitness repertoire. She teaches Learn to Swim and Intro to Masters Swim and has assisted many adults add swimming to their fitness skill set.

The Back Story

As children of the local fire chief, Dianne and her 2 older brothers were raised in Kewanee, IL (central Illinois, approximately 3 hrs. from Madison). Always an active youth, Dianne enjoyed playing tennis, softball and basketball. She particularly enjoyed and excelled in basketball where her Kewanee Boilermakers advanced to the Illinois high school state tournament 3 years in a row. More trivia: Dianne holds the school record for consecutive made free throws (it's 28, in case you're ever on Jeopardy and the question comes up…).

Out of high school, Dianne attended a local community college while also joining the Illinois Army National Guard. In total, she spent 6 years in the Army National Guard with the 135th Chemical Company.

Dianne attended Illinois State University (in Normal, IL) where she earned a degree in Therapeutic Recreation.

After college, Dianne worked at a variety of YMCAs until moving to Wisconsin in 1997. In 2000, she moved to Madison to take a position with MSCR (Madison Schools & Community Recreation) where she worked until joining our staff this past winter.

Dianne, her husband (Bob – an IT professional in the UW Athletics Dept), and their twin sons (15 yr. old high school freshmen) live in Waunakee. Filling out their home is a golden retriever and a dachshund.

One of Dianne's hobbies is baking (especially making cakes for special occasions). She enjoys biking, gardening and attending her kids' school and sporting events. She is a USA Swimming Official and volunteers with various summer league and club swim meets. She also volunteers with organizations who help support individuals with disabilities compete in sports and events; Dairyland Sports, Dare2Tri, and My Team Triumph.
