David Aufhauser, MD

David Aufhauser, MD, is a transplant surgeon at UW Health and an assistant professor in the Division of Transplantation at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Surgery. He specializes in kidney, liver and pancreas transplants.

Dr. Aufhauser performs transplants on patients who are in organ failure due to liver cancer, severe type 1 diabetes or other complex conditions. He also performs minimally invasive living donor nephrectomies (kidney removals) for those contributing healthy organs.

Dr. Aufhauser provides more than just surgical expertise. He takes time to educate his patients about the transplant process and post-surgery expectations. He also takes time to understand each patient's goals and tailor the treatment plan accordingly.

Dr. Aufhauser is committed to increasing the availability of organs for transplant and saving more lives. His research focuses on xenotransplantation which is the transplantation of organs or tissues from an animal source into a human recipient. If successful, xenotransplantation could provide more transplant options for people on the waiting list.

In his free time, Dr. Aufhauser enjoys running, biking and playing golf.

I love seeing how transplant patients change from when they come in the door very sick to when they leave the hospital, health restored. It's an unbelievable transformation and something I'm thrilled to be a part of.
