Daniel Matson, MD, PhD

Daniel Matson, MD, PhD, is a UW Health pathologist who specializes in hematopatholgy (the study of diseases of the cells that make up our blood). Dr. Matson is also an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

As a hematopathologist, Dr. Matson works closely with other specialists to diagnose disorders of the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes. He also performs and interprets biochemical and other types of specialized testing. His findings help other doctors to better understand their patients’ diseases and determine the best therapies and treatment plans.

Dr. Matson has a special interest in inherited bone marrow failure and syndromes that might increase the risk of leukemia. Through cellular-level lab research, he studies specific cancer risks in children and adults, including the cause of bone marrow failure. His research helps to develop improved diagnostic approaches and therapies.

In his free time, Dr. Matson enjoys spending time and traveling with his wife and children. He also enjoys weightlifting, biking, electric skateboarding and learning the German language.
