UW Health and UW School of Medicine and Public Health launch new study finder

Madison, Wis. — UW Health and the UW School of Medicine and Public Health have launched the UW Health Study Finder, a new, easily accessible website that lists UW studies and clinical trials that are currently recruiting participants.

From arthritis to women's health, there are hundreds of unique studies at UW's clinical locations. For example, it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a search for "breast cancer" on Study Finder yields 55 different trials.

Developing a familiarity with clinical trials will help our community better understand the current status of COVID-19 treatments and vaccines research, as well as other important healthcare research taking place during these challenging times.

Clinical trials are health research studies in which people voluntarily participate to assist researchers in finding ways to better prevent, diagnose, or treat health problems.

The purpose of a clinical trial is to find out whether a medicine or treatment is safe and effective for treating a certain condition or disease. Clinical trials compare the effectiveness of this medicine or treatment against standard, accepted treatment or against a placebo if there is no standard treatment. Patients and health care professionals can work together to determine if a clinical trial makes sense for a patient’s specific care needs.

There are currently five COVID-19 studies listed on Study Finder:

  • Safety, Tolerability, and Efficacy of Anti-Spike (S) SARS-CoV-2 Monoclonal Antibodies for Hospitalized Adult Patients With COVID-19

  • Safety, Tolerability, and Efficacy of Anti-Spike (S) SARS-CoV-2 Monoclonal Antibodies for the Treatment of Ambulatory Adult Patients With COVID-19

  • Study Assessing the Efficacy and Safety of Anti-Spike SARS CoV-2 Monoclonal Antibodies for Prevention of SARS CoV-2 Infection Asymptomatic in Healthy Adults Who Are Household Contacts to an Individual With a Positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Assay

  • Phase III Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Study of AZD1222 for the Prevention of COVID-19 in Adults

  • NCI COVID-19 in Cancer Patients, NCCAPS Study

These clinical trials are very important to advancing health care and prevention or treatment of disease, including the treatment of patients with COVID-19.

The phase 3 COVID-19 trial of an investigational vaccine developed by AstraZeneca continues to be on hold throughout the United States, including at UW.
