Madison, Wis. — Despite the COVID-19 crisis, UW Health continues to provide the highest level of care to our patients, and our commitment to saving lives has never been stronger.
Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing stories of people whose lives were saved during this pandemic, not necessarily from the COVID-19 illness but in spite of it.
Few people exemplify this better than Sarah and Christian Schartner of Sauk Prairie, whose two-month old son, Calvin, came to the American Family Children’s Hospital at the height of the COVID-19 crisis, suffering from acute liver failure and in urgent need of a liver transplant. Without one, doctors knew Calvin would likely not survive for long. But on April 27th the Schartners got the call that an organ donor was about to save their son. Later that day a team from the UW Health Transplant Program completed the liver transplant surgery and Calvin received his second chance at life.
