Madison, Wis. — Six months into the pandemic, UW Health will spend this week honoring some of the unsung healthcare heroes who are essential to our COVID-19 response.
Today we highlight phlebotomists at UW Health. Phlebotomists at UW Health collect blood, urine and other specialty samples from patients in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings for important medical testing. Given that 70 percent of all medical decisions are determined by laboratory results, phlebotomists play a vital role in the healthcare organization.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, phlebotomy at UW Health has become even more important. For example, the phlebotomy team has assisted in collecting more than 20,000 COVID-19 antibody tests. At University Hospital, the phlebotomy team also manages lab collections from patients with coronavirus, supporting patients and working on the frontlines of the pandemic response.
Phlebotomists at UW Health are vital to successfully responding to COVID-19. They build a trusting relationship with the patient in a short amount of time while collecting specimens in a reliable, safe and expert manner.
