The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Presents, "Diagnostic Medical Sonography - a SOUND career decision" 
The ultrasound school (known as the School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography) at UW Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wisconsin has two 24-month courses of study:
 

General Diagnostic Medical Sonography (24-months)

Echocardiography or Cardiac Ultrasound (24-months) 

 
What is a diagnostic medical sonographer? 
 
Diagnostic medical sonography uses ultrasound, or high frequency sound waves, to characterize and diagnose diseases in body organs and tissues. The use of ultrasound in medical diagnosis has become widespread in recent years. Among the parts of the body most commonly evaluated with ultrasound are the:
  • Heart 
  • Blood vessels
  • Abdominal organs
  • Pelvic organs
  • Pregnant uterus
The diagnostic medical sonographer is a health care professional who performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations under a physician's supervision. To perform imaging on patients in the clinical setting, sonographers are required to integrate medical knowledge of:
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Pathology
  • Ultrasound physics
