Liver Transplant: Bill's Story
Bill Vancil of Cross Plains received a liver transplant at UW Hospital and Clinics.
In February 2010, I received a liver transplant at the UW Transplant Clinic.
One of the hardest parts of the experience was the waiting. Every time I'd hear a helicopter coming in, I would think, "Maybe that's it." Eventually, the new liver did arrive.
During the surgery, doctors determined the liver was not capable of functioning properly. I was placed high on the priority list, as I was very near death. A second liver was located and, with it, the surgeons literally brought me back from the dead.
The care I received during my 3½ months in the hospital was superior, from the emergency room attendants to the surgeons to the rehab staff. I do not believe I could have received a higher degree of care anywhere else.
