Getting Green

Rooftop Healing Garden

Plans for a Rooftop Garden at UW Hospital and Clinics are underway, to offer patients, families, employees and faculty, a greener (and more healing) view.

Green Cleaning

  • UW Hospital continues to review all cleaning chemicals and work with companies across the country to determine if any "non-green" chemicals can be converted to "green" products. As of February, 2013, more than 10 percent of cleaning supplies are green.
  • To prevent hospital acquired infections, we must continue to use hospital grade disinfectant in all patient areas.
  • Efforts to reduce the number of chemicals we use are ongoing.
  • 17 of our UW Medical Foundation facilities are green cleaned.

LEED-certified Yahara ClinicLEEDing the Way: Green Building Designs

As UW Health continues to grow, we've committed to a LEED standard (Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design) for all new buildings since 2008 to ensure they are designed using principles and techniques that promote environmental sustainability and stewardship of resources, leading toward LEED certification.

One of the larger facilities in the works is our new American Center campus on the east side of Madison. Expected to open in 2015, the design goal of the new facility is an inviting, healing environment that is easy to navigate and offers not only patient- and family-centered health care surroundings, but also a pleasant and productive workplace for staff and physicians. Using environmentally friendly design and construction is one of the guiding principles for the new campus.
