Health Information

ImPACT concussion testingUW Health Sports Medicine has expanded its concussion treatment program by offering ImPACT concussion management to local and regional athletes.

What is ImPACT Concussion Management?

ImPACT is a user-friendly computer-based testing program specifically designed for the management of sports-related concussion that records an athlete's health history, current symptoms and neuropsychological data. The test takes approximately 25 minutes to complete.

A large number of sports teams, including the Green Bay Packers, the Milwaukee Brewers and the University of Wisconsin Badgers, use ImPACT for concussion assessement.

Taking the Baseline Test

High school athletes should take the baseline test, which evaluates the athlete's reaction time, concentration and memory with a series of questions, prior to head injury. That way, should head injury occur, UW Health Sports Medicine physicians will be able to compare pre-injury and post-injury test results. The test costs $10.

Take the test:
  1. Go to the Wisconsin Sports Concussion Collaborative Web site.
  2. Select the Take Baseline Concussion Test button in the upper right corner.
  3. Read the test provisions and then select the Individual Baseline Test button. Students who belong to member organizations can select the Member Organization button and enter their login credentials.
  4. Read the testing recommendations and then select the "I understand the testing recommendations" link.
  5. Select the Buy Now button to access the baseline test PayPal form. You will need a credit card to pay for the test. After you complete the PayPal process you will be able to take the test.
When should I contact UW Health Sports Medicine?

Athletes who have sustained concussions can call UW Health Sports Medicine at (608) 263-8850 to schedule an ImPACT post-injury assessment. Appointments with Sports Medicine staff should be scheduled after athletes have sustained injury.

UW Health Sports Medicine physicians can use the ImPACT test to compare the post-concussion ImPACT results against pre-injury test results or normative data, which provides objective information to assist in developing a treatment plan and to ensure the athlete's safety.

Insurance Coverage

The Sports Medicine ImPACT assessment, scheduled after injury, often is covered by insurance, depending on your policy.
