Swimming Lessons and Stroke Refinement

The UW Health Sports Medicine Fitness Center in Madison, Wisconsin offers a wide range of exercise/physical activity options, including swimming lessons.

First-time Swimmers

First time swimmer? No problem. Our Sports Medicine Aquatic Center instructors work hard to provide a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, with the main objective of ensuring that you achieve your personal swimming goals.

Getting Started

Individuals interested in taking swim lessons must undergo a pre-participation screening. This process includes providing a signed physician authorization form (pdf) and participating in either a phone screening or an in-person class assessment with the Fitness Center staff.

Our staff will coordinate faxing the authorization form to a physician. Upon receiving this completed form from the physician we contact the prospective swim lesson participant to either screen over the telephone or schedule him/her to come in for an assessment.

After completing this screening process, the individual will be cleared to begin swim lessons. The information will be passed on to our staff, who will contact the participant and assign the individual to a swim instructor based on scheduling, ability level and other needs.

Swim Stroke Filming

Have your swim stroke filmed from both above water and underwater perspectives. A DVD copy and 30-minute instructor analysis is included, and continued analysis/coaching is available through the private swim lesson program.
