This Month in Sports Rehabilitation: Athletic Performance for the Dancer (May 2013)
Dance requires high levels of athletic ability, including endurance, strength, stamina, flexibility and power.
According to the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science, dancers should focus more on being fit and healthy, and traditional training methods need to be re-examined as they often are "not sufficient to help prepare dancers for the higher, more physically demanding aspects of performance."
A growing field of interest, dance medicine has greatly improved the access dancers have to trained medical professionals. Studios are introducing more strength, stretch and Pilates classes taught by trained exercise specialists.
Athletic Performance for the Dancer: July 24-August 28
At UW Health Sports Medicine, we combine the best of these two worlds into one class: Athletic Performance for the Dancer. During this six-week class we will teach and train dancers about:
- Lumbo-pelvic alignment, posture awareness, and strength building based on the Pilates method
- Lower-extremity strength and neuromuscular control
- Dance technique and biomechanics looking at turn out, jumps, landings and turns
The class is geared towards dancers from 11-16 years old interested in ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, modern, contemporary and Irish dance.

Sports Medicine Dancers Clinic Staff
Our Dance Medicine staff includes physical therapist Jan Mussallem, athletic trainer and Pilates instructor Laura Moyer, and Jodi Zupancich, a physical therapist assistant with advance proficiency in musculoskeletal physical therapy and more than 20 years of dance experience. Our team has the education and experience to meet the athletic needs of all dancers.
