GME Benefits and Services

Disability Insurance

All residents are covered by a hospital-paid short and long-term disability plan. This plan protects you in the event you become ill or injured and are unable to work. Group premiums are completely paid by the hospital. A packet from Northwestern Mutual will be provided in your new hire packet with additional information. 

Liability Insurance

Comprehensive liability protection is provided for all residents for any training-related incident. Protection is granted for specific training activities approved by the Program Director and the UW Hospital and Clinics Risk Management Office for activities that take place outside the UW Hospital and Clinics. No protection is provided for activities outside the scope of the training program, such as moonlighting or unapproved electives not related to the program.

Licensure

In the state of Wisconsin, all physicians beyond their first year of postgraduate training are required to be licensed. All PG-3s and up will be unable to begin their training program until they have full licensure.

The GME Office conducts a Licensing session in November of each year for PG-1s to assist them in completing their full licensure application. The GME office reimburses the $125 fee for this application if completed by July 1 of their PG 2 year. 

Full Licensure

• Cost: $125+
  

   

• Renewal: October 31, 2009; all medical licenses in the state of Wisconsin expire on the same day, October 31, every odd numbered year.
  

   

• Application Process: If you are interested in obtaining full licensure, you should request an application from the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board at (608) 266-2811 or via the internet at http://drl.wi.gov/prof/doct/form.htm. Due to delays in obtaining full licensure, most new house officers apply for a TEP to cover the licensure requirement until they obtain full licensure.

Temporary Educational Permit

• Cost: $10

   

• Renewal: Annual renewal

   

• Limitations: This is a temporary license. You may not use a DEA number with a temporary license, and you may not do any moonlighting.

DEA

The GME Office pays for all DEAs, initial and renewal fees after receiving their full license. DEAs requiring renewal in the last year of residency will be reimbursed at a pro-rated amount.

Vacation

UW Hospital and Clinics residents are entitled to 3 weeks (21 days including weekends or 15 days not including weekends) paid vacation per year. When the resident is leaving UW Hospital and Clinics permanently, accrued vacation entitlement must be used prior to termination

On-Call Meals

• In House: When residents are required to be on-call at UW Hospital and Clinics overnight, meal cards are provided with an amount to help cover the cost of an evening meal and/or breakfast the following day.
• Home Call: Residents who are on-call from home and required to be in the hospital during the night and are unable to return home are provided with a meal card to help cover the cost of a meal.
• Food Lounge: The hospital delivers food to the House Staff Lounge (F5/606) every evening for the residents who are on-call and are unable to obtain an evening meal.
• Meriter, St Mary's and Veterans Administration Hospitals: These hospitals provide meals, with limits established by the individual hospital.

On-Call Rooms

On-call rooms are provided for programs required to be in the hospital overnight. A lounge with a television, refrigerator, microwave and computer is available (F5/606).

Merck Loan

An emergency loan is available to all resident for $1,000 at 2% interest for one year. This can be applied for with an easy application and no credit check. It is automatically deducted from their paychecks on either a monthly basis (10 months) or paid in one lump sum.

Membership on Medical Staff Committees

Residents have voting representation on the UW Hospital and Clinics Medical Board and it committees. These representatives are selected jointly by the Chair of the Medical Board and the President of the House Staff Association.

Scrubs and Lab Coats

Scrubs are distributed through scrub machine, return a set, and take out a set system. The GME office provides three lab coats are each training year.

Parking

The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Administrative office manages the purchase and distribution of parking permits to each accredited residency program. The GME office discounts the final cost of the permits. Parking is assigned on an annual basis for the parking year that runs from September 1 – August 31 every year.

Jumpstarts

Is your vehicle not starting? Valet will jump vehicles Monday-Friday, 5am-7pm. At any other hours, contact the security office at E6/206 across from the hospital information desk. The security office is equipped with a jump pack that will assist most vehicle batteries.

Shuttle Service

There is a shuttle service available every 10 minutes from Lot 76 to the hospital and University Station between the hours of 6-9am and 3-6pm.

House Staff Lounge

This lounge is open 24 hours a day and contains a television, refrigerator, microwave and computer. Food is delivered in the early evening for those unable to leave the patient floors.

UW-Madison Campus Photo ID

The University of Wisconsin affiliate photo ID allows residents to access library services and recreational facilities on the UW campus. The ID also qualifies for discounts at various local businesses.

Ombudsperson

The Ombudsperson is available to serve as a neutral, independent and confidential resource, for faculty, Residents and students, for dealing with conflicts with your colleagues that arise during the course of your training. The ombudsperson can listen to your concerns, clarify procedures, discuss options and when appropriate, may act as an intermediary.
