 Common Clinic Procedures and Examinations

Most children are born with a normal, healthy heart. Fortunately, for most of the one-in-100 families with a congenital heart defect, their child can be fully treated and go on to live a completely normal life.

Over the past several months, a growing number of families from across Wisconsin and beyond have been turning to American Family Children's Hospital in Madison for their child's comprehensive pediatric heart care.

"There is a real sense of excitement with our pediatric cardiology program these days," says J. Carter Ralphe, MD, Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at UW Health. "We have established some very good relationships with referring pediatricians across the state and our outcomes have been excellent."

Referring pediatricians are naturally looking for excellence when they send a patient to Madison. At the same time, however, they expect a reciprocal communication path regarding the patient's course of treatment.

Shelby Healy, MD, with Aspirus Pediatrics in Wausau, has been pleased by her encounters with the Pediatric Heart Program at American Family Children's Hospital.

"I know when my patients are admitted. I know when they are discharged. The UW physicians return our phone calls if we have questions. It has worked very well."

Dr. Healy also notes that families greatly appreciate the UW's outreach clinics where pediatric cardiologists and other specialists see patients much closer to home.

"Many of our patients have to drive three hours or more to get to Madison, so having cardiologists such as Carter Ralphe or Al Wilson come here is a real bonus, especially when the weather is bad," adds Dr. Healy. "Families also associate the UW with excellence, so knowing that their child is being seen by a UW pediatrician gives them great comfort."
