Herbert Chen, MD, Associate Professor in the Division of General Surgery and Section Chief of Endocrine Surgery, as the new Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Surgery. Dr. Chen joined the department in 2000. From the onset of his academic career at UW, he has proven to be a highly motivated, successful clinician-scientist and research mentor. Dr. Chen completed undergraduate studies at Stanford University and received his MD from Duke University School of Medicine.

 

 

On September 1, K. Craig Kent, MD, assumed the post of chair of the Department of Surgery at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. Most recently, Dr. Kent was the Greenberg-Starr Professor of Vascular Surgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Professor of Surgery at Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. He was Chief of the Combined Columbia and Cornell Division of Vascular Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Vice Chairman of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Surgery.

 

 

The Division of Urology at UW School of Medicine and Public Health is now the Department of Urology. Stephen Y. Nakada, MD, the David T. Uehling Professor of Urology, has been appointed the Inaugural Chair. Dr. Nakada leads a department that includes 16 physicians, three endowed chairs and more than $3.1 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health.

 

 

John Kuo, MD, PhD, was awarded the first HEADRUSH Brain Tumor Professorship Research Award at the University of Wisconsin Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. "This is really a testament to HEADRUSH founders Chris and Brandi Funk," says Dr. Kuo, chair of the Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center brain tumor clinical trials group, and co-director of the multidisciplinary brain tumor clinic. In four years, HEADRUSH and the HEADRUSH Event Team raised funds to endow the UW Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center professorship.

 

 

Hans Sollinger, MD, has been named an honorary member of the European Surgical Association (ESA). The European Surgical Association is the European equivalent of the American Surgical Association and is considered the most prestigious surgical society in Europe. Dr. Sollinger serves as the chairman of the division of transplant surgery at UW Hospital and Clinics. He will be inducted into the ESA on April 17, 2009, in Vienna, Austria.
