Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Abdominal wall reconstruction can rebuild areas of the abdominal wall that have been affected by cancer, hernia or injury.

The surgery is complex and often is the result of open wounds or hernias that may not be resolved by other specialties, therefore, a team approach is established. A general surgeon, for example, may call upon a plastic surgeon to perform abdominal wall reconstruction at the time of closure.

The procedure involves redistribution of the abdominal muscles and moving abdominal tissues to reinforce closure.  Your plastic surgeon might utilize tissue from another part of your body or synthetic mesh to fully restore the abdominal wall.
