Biliary Tree Drainage
UW Health Radiology provides the highest standard of care by exceptionally qualified medical and technical staff using state-of-the-art technology.
Causes of Incorrect Bile Drain from the Liver
- Bile may not drain properly because of damage to a bile duct after surgery or trauma.
- Some tumors also block bile drainage.
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Life-threatening bile infection.
This is an X-ray procedure in which a small drainage tube is passed through the right side into the liver. X-ray dye is used to guide the tube into the blocked bile ducts.
After the procedure, at least one night in the hospital is required. The symptoms of blocked bile drainage improve relatively soon after the procedure.
