Mortality Rates - Post Surgical

Actual vs Expected Mortality (Surgical) is the actual UW Hospital and Clinics mortality rate divided by an expected mortality rate calculated by the University HealthSystems Consortium (UHC) using a UHC-developed risk adjustment methodology. Starting with October 2009, we used the MSDRG-based UHC risk adjustment methodology in place of the previously used DRG-based methodology. The measure excludes bad data, LOS outliers and early deaths. A value below 1.0 indicates performance is better than expected based on risk adjusted population performance. Targets are based on performance of a select group of academic medical centers identified by the UW Hospital and Clinics Operations Council. The goal is currently 0.65. Data are reported monthly as they become available from UHC. Targets are updated yearly based on the previous calendar year data. The intent of this measure is to characterize how well UW Hospital and Clinics does in regards to providing clinical care and preventing mortality in comparison to our peers.
