30-day Surgical Mortality - Ventricular Assist Devices

n 2008, UW Hospital and Clinics received certification for its Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) program. The use of these heart pumps offers hope to patients with end-stage heart failure. For some patients, these pumps can be a permanent replacement pump. For others, the device is a bridge, carrying patients until their heart heals or a transplant is available.

The graph below shows 30-day surgical mortality rates for patients who have received ventricular assist devices.

About the Quality Data

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database allows benchmarking of outcomes against similar programs in the United States at institutions that participate in the STS database. The data included here are replicated from the Data Analyses of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Adult Cardiac Surgery Database for the period ending December 31, 2007.
