Baseball's Alex Rodriquez and Mike Lowell, professional sprinter Tyson Gay, NFL stars Sidney Rice and Kurt Warner and ultimate fighting champion Antonio "Minotauro" Nogueira have made hip surgery a hot topic in sports.
Recent advances in diagnosing and treating hip problems in athletes have brought this issue to the forefront of sports medicine. Femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI, is now being recognized as a culprit for chronic hip pain. This condition of the hip causes a painful pinching inside the joint which can lead to cartilage damage and possibly arthritis.
The physical therapists and athletic trainers at the UW Sports Rehabilitation clinics have specialized training in evaluating and treating hip problems, and can design a program to get the athlete with hip pain back in the game.
