UW Health Pharmacy Mission and Vision

Vision
 
UW Health Pharmacy will be the foremost provider of high-quality, patient-centered pharmacy services in the nation, serving as a statewide and national employer of choice for pharmacy leaders and practitioners dedicated to advancing patient care services. 

Mission
 
The fourfold mission of UW Health Pharmacy is to:

1. Provide safe, high-quality patient care
  • Enhance patients’ health-related quality of life in all settings by exercising leadership in improving the use of medications by individuals and populations.
  • Provide medication therapy management service to patients to ensure the highest level of drug therapy outcomes and customer service.
  • Assure coordination of drug therapy across the continuum of care.
  • Assume primary responsibility and leadership for advancing medication use and drug distribution systems within the UW Health system.
  • Assist UW Health patients in finding access to the medications they need.
  • Maximize pharmacist recognition and participation as patient care providers.
  • Take a leadership role in continuously improving and redesigning the medication use process with the goal of achieving significant advances in:
    • Patient safety, especially as related to medication safety
    • Health-related outcomes
  • Maximize innovative use of personnel, information technology and automation to enhance pharmacist patient care services and patient safety.
  • Ensure a non-punitive culture for reporting medication errors and near-misses.
  • Lead evidence-based medication use programs to support best practices.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively across all areas of the organization.
  • Assure strong organizational financial performance through the promotion of cost-effective medication therapy, growth of pharmacy-related business ventures, and maximizing reimbursement for pharmacy services.
  • Ensure supply chain integrity and efficiency to protect patients from harm.
  • Incorporate UW Health values, including compassionate care, active learning, respect for others, and excellence and innovation, into all aspects of pharmacy practice.

2. Educate the next generation of pharmacy and other health care professionals

  • Collaborate with the UW Schools of Pharmacy, Medicine and Nursing to provide student education.
  • Serve as the premier training site for the UW School of Pharmacy and promote excellence in education.
  • Provide internationally acclaimed advanced residency training for future leaders within the profession.
  • Provide clinical, management and leadership training within the School of Pharmacy curriculum.
  • Advance knowledge of safe patient care services and medication use systems.
  • Influence state and national pharmacy and medication-related health care trends.
  • Assure active, lifelong learning for pharmacy staff.

3. Provide education and outreach services to the community

  • Extend pharmacy services, educational programs, and resources to patients throughout Wisconsin.
  • Promote poison prevention outreach to Wisconsin residents.

4. Conduct research to discover new methods of treatment and prevention

  • Uphold a commitment to education and research activities to enhance medication-related patient care systems.
  • Engage in the areas of clinical, pharmacy practice, and health services research to improve patient care and optimize allocation of health care resources.
  • Provide leadership and services across the organization’s research infrastructure – supporting today’s research and preparing for tomorrow’s challenges.
  • Coordinate medication related research efforts across UW Health.
