Bringing lights, cameras and professional photographers to American Family Children's Hospital each month, the "Flashes of Hope" program transforms a clinic waiting room into a photo studio – offering kids with cancer and serious illnesses a rare break from the emotional and physical rigors of treatment.

family; The Challenges of Parenting When Children Are IllWhen a child is sick, particularly with a severe illness, it can be difficult for parents to discipline him or her. Often, parents feel guilty because the child is already coping with so much. Yet discipline is exactly what children need.

It's a Full House

Thank you to each of you for your patience as we expand our care of children with cancer. As many of our families who are requiring an inpatient stay will attest to, the hospital beds have been pretty much at capacity since the new American Family Children's Hospital opened in August of 2007.

While we are pleased that our beautiful facility is being utilized by children in the region, we recognize that the admission process has been complicated by bed availability.

The leadership of the children's hospital is working to find creative solutions. We also will keep you updated as more information on the future expansion plans becomes available.

New Inpatient Nurse Practitioner

Lisa Keller, nurse practitioner, will be joining the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology team in April. Lisa has worked many years as a staff nurse on the pediatric hematology-oncology unit. She has been a school nurse practitioner for many years, but continued over the summer breaks to work as a staff nurse on the inpatient unit.

Lisa will be the inpatient nurse practitioner and share with the inpatient team her expertise on supportive care and care coordination. Of importance, Lisa will provide a consistent presence for patients and families and staff. Please welcome her to the team.
