Surgery for Failed Total Joint Replacements (Revision Surgery)

At UW Health in Madison, Wisconsin, our joint replacement surgeons have specialty training and extensive experience in surgery to correct failure of a joint replacement (revision total joint surgery).

Unfortunately, some hip and knee replacements fail prematurely while others simply "wear out" with years of usage. Repeat surgery for a failed total joint replacement is called revision surgery. Common reasons for revision total joint surgery are:
  • Loosening of the joint replacement
  • Breakage or wear of the joint replacement parts
  • Instability (hip dislocations)
  • Joint replacement infection, and others

Surgery to correct failure of a joint replacement is more complex than routine joint replacement. Upon referral from your original joint replacement surgeon, our joint replacement surgeons are available for consultation to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for total joint revision surgery.
